**The Punning Man**
What’s in a name? For Rally Jr star, Mitch Ubishi, his very existence may be at stake. Opening up to investigative reporter, Paige Turner, Ubishi explains his successes as well as the controversy threatening to end the 20 year old’s burgeoning career.
PT: There’s threats from the sport’s authorities that you have to change your name. Where does your name come from.
MU: Well, Paige, my name comes from my parents- like all names! My dad is Japanese, which is where I get my surname from, and my mum is English. Born in the UK, both parents wanted me to have an English-sounding name so I was named Mitch, after my mum’s maiden name, Mitchell.
PT: That all sounds plausible.
MU: Right. But the higher ups at MRC are saying my name is “not real” — this is odd. All names have been made up, at some point, which means all names are real, even newly made up ones.
PT: Your manager, the handsome and witty DadJokes81, has a reputation for signing drivers with striking names.
MU: Oh yeah. Liam Borgini was successful in Chinese F4. Then there’s the rally drivers Audrey Quattro, Minnie Cooper, Lance Ian Delta and Alfie Romeo; touring car driver Ron O’McGann was another.
PT: And there’s many more. And MRC had no issue with these drivers’ names?
MU: None at all. The first driver MRC had an issue with was Nizahn Al-Meera.
PT: the Anglo-Arab F3 driver?? What was wrong with his name?
MU: MRC said his name didn’t originate in the UK.
PT: But there are plenty of British people with names of a foreign origin. To say publicly that Al-Meera, Ubishi or Khan aren’t British names could actually get you into trouble with the law.
MU: Yes the censorship in the UK is a bit over the top. Still, can’t complain.
PT: Literally. And Ubishi was also picked up as a “non-British” and therefore banned name? So only non-European names are picked up on.
MU: Yes, and so some friends of mine have said the policy is probably racist, but I’m not sure. It could just be ignorance of the fairly liberal naming laws in the UK. I hope it can be resolved.
PT: Choosing the name you have, your parents must like rallying?
MU: For sure. And with my Japanese heritage they want me to drive for Toyota.
PT: Toyota? What about Mitubishi?
MU: Me? I prefer Subaru.
PT: …. Uh…. OK, well, Mitch, it’s been a pleasure. I wish you all the best in your promising rally career. Is there anything else you’d like to add about MRC censorship?
MU: [content removed]
PT: Perfect. Goodbye, Mitch.
MU: Bye, Paige.
